Humans have left their mark in the Quercy region over thousands of years. Some of the earliest traces are found in the Grotte du Pech Merle - astonishing artistic impressions where you can enter the emotional and feral world of the cave dwellers - pointillated horses, bison, mammoths, aurochs, and the famous hand stencil, the icon of our region.

There are a great many caves in the area and a substantial portion of them served as habitations. Some are surrounded by mysteries, including their geological origin, which remains undetermined. Many legends surround them, all of which will delight and intrigue the visitor as well as being an integral part of their history.
