The Château de Cénevières

Châteaux de CénevièresBuilt on the cliffs of the village in the Causses de Quercy Natural Park , the Chateau de Cénevières dates from the 13th to the 16th centuries and is one of the most splendid monuments of the Renaissance in Quercy. Listed as a historical monument since December 9, 1957, the owners welcome you to explore the castle, located 6 km from Saint-Cirq Lapopie, overlooking the Lot valley from its terraces.

A place full of history

From the ninth century the famous Lapopie family, the lords who gave their name to the medieval village of Saint-Cirq Lapopie located 6 km from Cénevières, began building the chateau. In the twelfth century the founding family sold its property to the Gourdons, who became lords of the castle and land owners aroud Cénevières.

In 1580, the young King of Navarre, the future King Henry IV, visited his friend Antoine de Gourdon, who had by then transformed his castle into a palace of the Italian Renaissance.

Since 1793 the De Braquilanges family have been the owner occupiers of this unique piece of of the Renaissance in Quercy and the castle became a historical monument in 1957. the family opened its doors to the public in order to perpetuate the history and upkeep of this wonderful place, so full of stories both great and small.

You will have the opportunity to contemplate both the madiaeval castle with its keep, its guard room, the former kitchen, the chapel and dungeon, and the renaissance palace with its gallery, its frescoes, painted ceiling in the living room, its famous "alchemy room" and bedrooms.

It is also possible to rent the castle rooms for weddings, seminars, christenings, meetings and any event to which you'd like to add an authentic and grandiose element of charm.
